Drawing comparisons between the struggles of the people of Sudan and Palestine and the broader Middle East and North Africa region, the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) on February 3 strongly denounced Donald Trump’s proposal to permanently displace the Palestinian people.
The SCP said Trump’s statements “blatantly express the intentions of the imperialist powers to exploit the results of the Gaza war to eliminate the right of the Palestinian people to remain in their land, determine their destiny and establish their independent state, by calling for the displacement of Gazans to Egypt, Jordan and any other areas.
“The peoples of the region are now in front of the plan of creative chaos and the Greater Middle East project, behind which the imperialist powers aim to redraw the borders of the countries of the region and fragment them into small states to weaken them and then control their resources and extend their influence over global trade routes.”
The same countries driving the New Middle East project are providing political, economic and military support to Israel – including throughout its genocidal assault on Palestine – relying on the apartheid state to become the most powerful in the region and serve as the beachhead of Western capital’s interests.
“The Democratic administration under Biden opened US arms depots to Israel in its war on Gaza and its invasion of Lebanon, and to cover up its crime of supporting Israeli aggression,” said the SCP statement. “America is exerting soft pressure on Israel to open corridors for the entry of relief and aid to the Palestinians, while it [Israel] is the same one that chases them from one shelter to another with continuous shelling and storming hospitals and homes.
“Despite all these violations, America is silent on Netanyahu’s refusal to appear before the International Criminal Court and uses its veto power to give Israel a free hand to continue its war crimes and genocide even after reaching a truce agreement.”
The US and its allies including Canada also stood by while Israel invaded Lebanon and refused to withdraw from its territory, and while it invaded Syria with the aim of destroying that country’s military power. All the while, the Western countries insist that Israel is simply exercising its right to self-defence.
The new Republican administration in the US continues this pro-Israel and anti-Palestinian policy, with Trump asking Egypt and Jordan to “welcome” Gazans into their countries as a way to “resolve” the situation through permanent displacement of Palestinians.
The Sudanese communists note similarities between what is happening now in their country and what is taking place in Gaza – specifically, they point to the imperialist plan “to destroy the December revolution in Sudan, as one of the prominent examples of national liberation revolutions in the region. It is the same scheme practiced by the two parties to the war in Sudan [the army and the militia forces] with the support of global and regional imperialist powers to continue the war and the resulting repercussions.”
The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has subjected the people to terrorism, war crimes, destruction of key infrastructure and the forced displacement of nearly 15 million people. The SCP warns that the war is effectively preparing the way for dividing the country and others in the surrounding region on ethnic, regional and sectarian bases into small weak states which can be easily controlled and exploited for resources and geopolitical strategic reasons.
“The US imperialist plan is to redraw the borders of the countries of the region as part of the Greater Middle East project for its interests and to protect its client, Israel. The existing Arab regimes are already aligned with this project, as they are the protectors of imperialist interests in the region and are protected by these circles to remain in power despite the desires of their peoples.”
Noting that confronting this situation requires a mass movement in the region involving national parties and social organizations, the SCP says that the campaign for solidarity with the Palestinian people is the decisive factor in changing the balance of power in favour of revolutionary and progressive national efforts and defeating the Greater Middle East project.
“Inevitably, the Palestinian people will be victorious in winning their rights to remain in their land, determine their destiny, and establish their independent state.”
