Health professionals in Manitoba deliver big strike vote

In late January 2025, members of the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals (MAHCP) voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike, with 96 percent support. This decision comes after 10 months without a contract.

The union represents over 7,000 allied health professionals working across more than 50 specialized disciplines in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and community and long-term care facilities. Currently, MAHCP is the only healthcare union in Manitoba without a contract.

Despite the Manitoba NDP’s campaign promises to address issues in healthcare, member surveys reveal that the situation is deteriorating rather than improving. MAHCP members report significant declines in staffing levels, increased workloads, and worsening workplace morale. A recent report by the Manitoba government identifies staffing shortages and strained capacity as the primary drivers of challenges within the healthcare system.

To address these issues, MAHCP is calling for a competitive contract that will not only attract new staff but also retain existing professionals. “Manitoba must compete if we want to retain specialized allied health staff, and that has to start with a new contract without further delay,” said union president Jason Linklater. “Unfortunately, sometimes the only action that has a real impact is the threat of job action, and we’re prepared to take that step.”

It’s time for the Manitoba NDP to align their actions with their promises – and their own reports – by delivering a fair and competitive contract for allied health professionals. The well-being of Manitoba’s healthcare system depends on it.
